When it comes to music for your wedding, many brides and grooms remember to pick out the song for their first dance, but there are other important numbers they have to make sure are added to the playlist! One number that is gaining in popularity for weddings is a dance between mother and daughter.
It is a lovely new tradition, and we have some tips to help you choose the right number to send the exact message you want to convey.
What Is It All About?
Other than the first dance between the newly married couple, traditionally the other essential song is the one for the father-daughter dance. Many brides are now choosing to add or replace that with a mother-daughter dance for any number of reasons.
It could be because the father is not involved or perhaps cannot attend the wedding, or the mother-daughter bond is so special the bride wants to make the time to dance with her mother on her wedding day too. The moment takes away all the stressful months of worrying about the perfect flowers, finding the right wedding dress or sifting through dozens of mother of the bride dresses to find the right one.
Whatever the reason, this dance is about the bride singling out how special her Mom is to her, and there sure is nothing bad about that!
The Best Tearjerker
Some songs are funny and sweet, and then there are those that would challenge everyone in the room to not shed a tear! These are songs that express just how much your Mom has been there for you.
The quintessential, classic tearjerker would have to be Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. It might be a bit old, but you would be hard-pressed to find someone that doesn’t understand the meaning behind it.
Powerful Ballads
Other strong contenders are Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up – a song about the power of a mother’s love, Where You Lead, I Will Follow by Carole King – about the symbiotic relationship between a mother and daughter, and Celine Dion’s Because You Loved Me.
Picture the moment: two beautiful women dressed in wedding and gold mother of the bride dresses dancing together on a warm night in front of all their loved ones with one of these lovely songs in the background – what’s not to like?
Mom-Specific Songs
Some brides might be happy with songs that are generally about the strength and love they have found in others, and be able to apply it to the relationship they have with their Mom. Other brides might be looking for something more specific.
If you are looking for a song that is a little more wedding-specific, you can’t go past Mama’s Song by Carrie Underwood. The Best Day by Taylor Swift is great as it’s written from the perspective of a daughter reflecting on times she spent with her Mom.
Whichever song is chosen, there is no doubt it will be a special moment at the wedding, and an unforgettable one between mother and daughter!
